Hundreds of supporters of the National Council of Resistance of Iran participate in a demonstration on the 44th anniversary of the Iranian revolution against Shahh Reza Pahlavi, in Paris, France, 12 February 2023. The protesters rejected the Shah’s dictatorship in the then Imperial State of Iran from 16 September 1941 until he was overthrown in the Iranian Revolution on 11 February 1979, and the following mullahs’ theocracy and called for a democratic and secular government in Iran.
On Sunday, thousands of Iranians and supporters of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) and the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) gathered at Place Denfert Rochereau in Paris to show their solidarity with the ongoing protests in Iran and to commemorate the legacy of the 1979 anti-monarchic revolution. Thegathering was a powerful demonstration of the solidarity of the Iranian diaspora and their supporters with the struggle for freedom in Iran.
The keynote speaker of the event was Maryam Rajavi, the President-elect of the NCRI. In her speech, Mrs. Rajavi emphasized the importance of the ongoing protests in Iran and the role of the Iranian Resistance in securing a democratic, secular, and non-nuclear republic.
She said, “The Iranian people have risen up against the regime and are shouting in the streets: death to the dictator. The regime has shown its true colors, by resorting to the most brutal means to quell the protests. The time has come for the international community to stand with the Iranian people in their pursuit of freedom and democracy.”
The gathering was marked by powerful speeches from prominent European politicians, including French mayors and former Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt, who expressed their support for the Iranian people’s struggle for democracy and their rejection of any form of tyranny. Verhofstadt stated, “We stand in solidarity with the people of Iran in their quest for freedom and democracy. The theocratic regime in Iran has been suppressing the voices of the Iranian people for too long, it’s time for them to be heard.” He added, “The Iranian people have suffered under the yoke of tyranny for far too long. We must stand in solidarity with them and support their struggle for a democratic and secular republic.
The world cannot remain silent in the face of human rights violations and the suppression of dissent. We must take action to bring about a better future for the people of Iran.”
Verhofstadt concluded, “The Iranian people deserve freedom and democracy, and we must stand with them in their quest for a better future. The international community must acknowledge the transition to a democratic government led by Maryam Rajavi.”
Former Speaker of the UK House of Commons, John Bercow, also addressed the crowd, saying “The monarchical despotism of the Shah gave way to the religious despotism of the ayatollahs. They do not believe in freedom, the rights of women, the media, or ethnic minorities. The people of Iran deserve democracy and freedom, the rule of law, respect for the media, equality for women, and the protection of the equal rights of minorities.”
Colombian presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt also took the stage, stating “The Iranian people have a unique opportunity today. The opposition is present not only in Iran but also across the world. The struggle for freedom in Iran is led by women, including Maryam Rajavi, who is at the forefront of the Iranian Resistance.” She went on to add, “We must stand in solidarity with the protesters in Iran and support their aspirations for a free Iran. Our governments must acknowledge the transition to a democratic government led by Maryam Rajavi.”
The event was also attended by numerous other political leaders and human rights activists, who spoke about the importance of supporting the Iranian people in their fight for freedom and democracy. Many participants held up posters of Maryam Rajavi and chanted slogans in support of the Iranian people’s struggle.
The international community has been paying close attention to the situation in Iran, as the country remains in a state of flux following the recent protests. The events in Paris on Sunday serve as a reminder of the continued efforts of the NCRI and its supporters to bring about a better future for the people of Iran. The demonstration of solidarity in Paris also highlights the urgency of the situation, as the Iranian people continue to fight for their rights and freedoms.
The gathering at Place Denfert Rochereau was a powerful display of the commitment of the Iranian diaspora and their supporters to the struggle for freedom in Iran. The speeches and the presence of political leaders from around the world serve as a reminder that the world is watching, and that the international community stands with the people of Iran in their struggle to establish a democratic republic.
It was clear from the speeches and the enthusiasm of the participants that the people of Iran have great hopes for a brighter future and are willing to continue their struggle for democracy and human rights. The international community must stand in solidarity with the Iranian people and support their aspirations for a free, democratic, and secular Iran. The world cannot turn a blind eye to the human rights violations and atrocities committed by the current regime, and it is imperative that the international community takes action to hold the regime accountable and support the establishment of a democratic government that truly represents the will of the Iranian people.
